now that our walls are mostly washed, we need to start paint shopping. i have always wanted red, so i am going to do red dining room (deep red). floors will be wood and our table is black wood with white chairs and we will have white trim. this room leads to the living room, and i am at a loss what to do in there! i love color but don't want to get too crazy. we also don't have furniture for the living room yet. so should i stay neutral? how do you know what colors will look right together? i am HORRIBLE with this stuff. i know what i like when i see it, but not how to get it if that makes sense. i need a decorator!

I LOVE painting!!! It is the first thing I do when I move!!
What I do it get a TON of paint chip samples and start picking my favorites. I then lay them all against each other and see if they complement each other. We used to have a tiny (600 sq. ft. house) and every room was a different color. The LR was a type of gold/yellow, kitchen was green, one bedroom was blue, and the other deep red. Sounds a little odd, but when you walked in the front door you could see every room and somehow all the colors worked together and looked really great. When we sold the house, the buyer said that was one of their favorite things - the paint colors ![]() Don't be afraid to try things, check out the mis-tinted paints on clearance (at home depot and lowes they are usually only $5-8/gallon, even WM has them) It is a great way to try colors with out spending a lot of $$. Paint is easy to change, so start with a favorite color and build from there. It can be a lot of fun!
Right now our colors are: LR - Gray/Blue
Kitchen/DR - Minty Green (came out mintier than planned but I like it)
Bedroom 1 - Blue (like a gray/slate blue)
Bedroom 2 - Orange (BRIGHT like sunset orange)
Bedroom 3 - Yellow (Bright!!)
Bathroom - White with Gray (from the LR) accents
Somehow they all work together

If you are looking for a decorator, you could check the local colleges near you. Some of them including tech and community colleges have design programs and the students need to do final projects. So you might be able to get ideas or help from a student, to at least point you in the right direction, really inexpensively.

sherwinwilliams.com and benjaminmoore.com have "paint your home" programs free online. you can't paint the models for free or buy the cd and use it at home to upload pics of your house. anyway, it suggests other colors to go with the ones you choose. or maybe there are books at the library?
i love paint :) we've just decided on the colors for repainting the house and i can't wait to get it finished. |

I think a camel would look nice with a red and would be a neutral base to start with but still give you some color.

Another consideration: get your red room and then stick with neutral everywhere else, and decorate with colour rather than getting your colour from the walls. If you have some favourite pieces or wall art that you want to use, you can build your colour from there. That's what we did in our basement and I really like the flexibility I have to find little treasures and not feel restricted by the colour of my walls.

dh is rethinking the red lol. unless we do a chair rail and do cream on the bottom or something he thinks its too dark for that room. he would like a goldish color with a warm apricotty colored living room. i think we are going to do white in the kitchen until we can replace the counter because we hate it and don't want to base colors around it.
for flooring we are likely going real natural red oak or maple in the kitchen, living, dining and foyer. all carpet upstairs and in the family room. we decided to get the flooring in first then paint. i agree that we should pick our fav colors then go with complimentary neutrals for the other rooms. thanks! |

Paint first!!!! Not to cause a panic, but it is so much easier to paint when you don't have to worry about the floors! Of course you'll have to do few touch ups, but you'll likely need to do that after you move all your stuff in anyway.

I totally agree with Mary Beth.... You definitely want to PAINT FIRST! It will be so much easier and less stressful if you don't have to worry about getting paint all over your pretty new floors!

Tape your paint samples to the walls. This will give you an honest wall color. Look at it with the lights on and off. Different lighting produces different color results. Stare at them for a few days. If your store doesn't mind you can get four of the same sample color and tape them together to get a larger sample to judge. It's often hard to make a decision when the color samples are so small. I've often dragged pillows, cushions, etc to the store to help me make a decision. Good Luck.
